Joan Burstein and her husband Sidney founded Browns in 1970. After opening a small boutique at 27 South Molton Street, Browns quickly became one of London’s most important fashion destinations. The store grew quickly and expanded through five connecting townhouses. Joan Burstein is credited with discovering such talents as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and Comme des Garçons. Her talent for spotting future fashion super stars, "is nothing more than a hunch, "it just happens", she says. “People say, ‘How can you tell’ It’s a gut instinct."

Today, Browns is just as revolutionary as it ever was and is considered one of London’s most important fashion landmarks. The store is dedicated to promoting new design talent and has recently championed designers such as Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang. It continues to offer pieces that have been individually handpicked from the world's top designers. "We buy only pieces we like, we edit tremendously. It’s all about quality and individuality. It's all a concept." says Joan Burstein. Simon Burstein, son of Joan and Sidney, is the current company CEO and works closely with his sister, Caroline Burstein, who is Browns' Creative Director.
