If there is one brand that can be regarded as a pioneer in taking the link between fashion and architecture beyond the mere design of a retail venue, that is Prada. The firm’s links with Rem Koolhas and Ole Scheeren’s Office of Metropolitan Architecture for the design of the Prada Epicenter stores in New York’s SoHo district (2001) and Los Angeles (2004), and with Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron for the Aoyama Epicenter in Tokyo (2003) gave a radical new twist to the relationship between architecture and fashion.
These particular studios were chosen to define the so-called “Prada Universe”, and explore why shopping as both a means and an end had become a core element in world culture and lifestyle.
Prada also called in Italian architect Roberto Baciocchi to design the interior of some of its stores. He has also designed boutiques for the group’s other brands Miu Miu and Church’s. Prada sells its products through around a hundred own-brand stores all over the world, at select multi-brand stores and department stores and via its website www.prada.com.
