Harrods founder Charles Henry Harrod first established his business in London in 1824, and with the help of his son, built it into a thriving retail operation selling medicines, perfume, stationery, fruit and vegetables. Harrods rapidly expanded, acquired the adjoining buildings and employed one hundred people by 1880. Some of the department store’s customers included Oscar Wilde, Sigmund Freud and members of the Royal Family.

Today, Harrods is an upmarket department store occupying a 5-acre site and over one million square feet of selling space at Brompton Road in Kightsbridge, London. Harrods is one of the world's most famous stores and one of London's tourist attractions thanks to the wide assortment of luxury goods that are on display in a magnificently decorated building. The impressive domed structure was built between 1901 and 1905 after a design by local architects C. W. Stephens and E. J. Munt. Its over 330 departments make it the biggest department store in Europe. Several of these departments, like the seasonal Christmas department or the Food Hall, are world famous.
