Bangkok stands out as perhaps the most passionate, bustling, magnetic city in Asia. It is impressive at first sight and impossible to forget, and one feels compelled to return whenever the opportunity arises. Bangkok is not only remarkably hospitable but also offers electrifyingly good shopping. The city’s dynamic transport system with its tuc-tucs and its roadside stalls selling practically anything finds a counterpart in its great shopping malls. Rama I Road is owned almost entirely by the Siam malls: Siam Paragon, which brings together the most exclusive luxury brands in a large mall featuring names such as Ermenegildo Zegna, Burberry and Paul Smith, Siam Center and Siam Discovery Center, with more urban but equally up-to-date fashion styles including brands such as Diesel and DKNY.
Shoppers are encouraged to take the elevated train eastwards along the same street to look down on all the bustle of the city and its people on their way to two more major shopping centres: Gayrson, which features renowned luxury brands such as Dior, Givenchy and Hugo Boss, and Erawan, standing just opposite, which is the exclusive domain of the Club 21 group, founded and managed by Christina Ong, which also runs a fine, highly recommendable hotel called The Metropolitan, whose staff are dressed in modern, elegant clothing by Comme des Garçons. At the Erawan centre the men’s and women’s fashion store is accompanied by a store given over entirely to accessories called Club 21 Accessories, an outlet store with discount clothing from previous seasons.
Elsewhere, in the vibrant, cutting-edge Sukhumvit district of the city with its restaurants and designer stores, which can also be reached via the elevated train, stands Emporium, another shopping mall containing leading brands such as Prada, Blumarine and Chanel, among others. |
